Taronga Western Plains Zoo is expanding its elephant facility to make way for three male elephants from Taronga Zoo, who will arrive in the latter half of 2014.

Animal welfare is paramount at Taronga and Taronga Western Plains Zoos, and the condition of many animals at the Surabaya Zoo shown on the ‘Foreign Correspondent’ program tonight are disturbing and deplorable. Our Zoos are members of the Australasian regional association of zoos (Zoo and Aquarium Association, ZAA). The Association has indicated its willingness, if asked, to join with any proposed task force from the Indonesian Government or Indonesian regional zoo association to assist the animals and staff of Surabaya Zoo.

Taronga Zoo primate keepers watched early one morning last week as the newest member of the Zoo’s renowned Chimpanzee group was born to mother, Kuma.
