Once widespread in inland arid Australia, this rodent is now restricted to the gibber plains of the Lake Eyre Basin. It digs shallow burrows which are linked by surface runways to form colonies covering many square kilometres. Foraging during the cool of the night they eat seeds, supplemented with plant matter and insects.
