Berani is our male Malayan Tapir at Taronga Zoo. He was born on the 2nd of July 1995.
His diet at the zoo consists of vegetables (especially greens), fruits, and bread. Berani comes inside several times a day so keepers can hide food for him on exhibit.
He is trained so that when a little bell rings, he comes into his den for a food reward. Keepers then go into his exhibit and hide fruit on all the rocks and logs, and tie leafy branches and Lucerne hay up in nets in the trees for him to munch on.
His favourite activities include sunbaking and swimming. Tapirs only defecate in the water which is hard fun for his keepers to clean the next day! Berani can often be found in the mornings swimming with the Koi Carp that share the exhibit’s pond.
