Beads for Wildlife

From early March we want you to discover how beads made by Kenyan tribeswomen can help wildlife in Northern Kenya.

The beadwork is made by over 600 women from across seven community groups throughout the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) region in Northern Kenya.  These communities depend on livestock for their livelihood.  The beadwork provides these communities with an alternate income to support Kenyan families who can then rely less on livestock.  This means more vegetation and water are available for local wildlife.  More beads = less livestock = more wildlife. It’s simple!

Some of the species that benefit from this beadwork include Hippos, Elephant, Giraffe, African Wild Dog, Cheetah and Lion.

So come and join us and get your beads for wildlife from the Taronga Western Plains Zoo Shop!
