The Rainforest Heroes iPad app, developed in partnership with the NSW Curriculum and Learning Innovation Centre, gives students a fresh new way to explore the Zoo and learn more about the animals along Taronga’s ‘Rainforest Trail’.
Students can wander up to the Fishing Cat and give it a virtual feed, or peer at tree-climbing enthusiast, the Binturong, through digital binoculars. Of course there’s also a whole bunch of facts to discover, short movies to watch, and photographs to take.
It’s all free, and at the end of your visit, you can compile all your discoveries into a PDF field report.
The app is great for people of all ages, but is especially useful as an engaging learning tool for school students learning about rainforest ecosystems.
Rainforest Heroes was developed to help visitors engage with conservation on a deeper level, and 93% of students who trialled the app agreed that their learning experience was more enjoyable.
You don’t even need to be at the Zoo to use the app – but obviously it’s wilder if you are!
The Rainforest Heroes App is available for free from the App Store on iPad or at www.itunes.com/appstore
