Work with animals and real zoo keepers hearing amazing stories Book Now

Hi kids! Want to be a zoo keeper but too young to join YATZ or volunteer?

Junior Keeper for a Day is a specially designed hands-on day for children aged 8 - 11 years old who’d like to work with animals or in the conservation field when they grow up. Hosted by our team of dedicated Educators, participants learn the daily routines and expectations of a Taronga Keeper.

Through a range of interactive activities and special behind the scenes visits, Junior Keeper for a Day participants will meet some of Taronga Zoo's Australian native animals up close and learn how we can care for them and protect them into the future.

Junior Keeper for a Day is an amazing experience and a once in a lifetime opportunity to get really close to some of Taronga Zoo’s most popular animals!

What are the age requirements for this program?

Age: 8 - 11 years old.

Unfortunately, this does mean that we are unable to accept any children younger than 8 years old for this program.

What do we need to bring on the day?

We will provide the children with a morning snack and their own 'Keeper for a Day' t-shirt but you will need to provide them with a packed lunch and refillable water bottle for the day.

You will also need to ensure that your Junior Keeper has clothes that you won't mind them getting dirty, closed toe shoes and weather appropriate items e.g. hat, sunglasses, rain jacket etc.

Can I come in with the kids on the day?

Sorry, 8-11 year olds only!

Parent's are welcome to visit the Zoo but you'll need to buy a ticket from admissions. Please note whilst you may occassionally see the kids when they're out on Zoo grounds, you won't be able to follow them while they're on the program as they also go to restricted the behind the scenes areas. This is also a matter of child safety.

Other options for parents while the kids attend Keeper for a Day are to visit the local shops and cafes, (there's even a few day spa's around the corner should you need a bit of relaxation!), or the National Park down the road. There's also a beach nearby if it's a sunny day!

What happens if the day I've booked is forecasted to be rainy/windy/hot?

Taronga’s keepers work in all weather conditions so our Keeper for a Day programs are all-weather events too! We advise that appropriate clothing is provided for the day and precautions are taken.

In extreme conditions the program may be cancelled however, we would be in contact with you to reschedule.

Is there a photo to take home of their experience?

Unfortunately no, but if you'd like a photo please send a camera with your child and our hosts will be happy to take photos for you. (This way the kids get to take their own photos too!)

Do you do birthday parties?

Sorry, no!

You could always have your own party after the program concludes.
