For an ocean friendly future Fish for Good ▶

As a major retailer of seafood, we recognise our role in safeguarding oceans in a sustainable way. Seafood is an integral part of our fresh food offer so healthy oceans, sustainable fish stocks and a thriving fishing industry are all-essential to our business. We want our customers to feel safe in the knowledge that the fish they buy from us we’re working hard to source sustainable seafood at no impact on price, quality or choice.

Our commitment

Our aim is to ensure that all our seafood comes from sustainable sources by 2015.

  • From January, all of our Select brand canned tuna will be pole and line caught.
  • We have XX Select brand products MSC certified and are continuing to increase.
  • We will phase out the use of fish aggregation devices (FADs) by the end of 2015 in all own brand canned tuna. Removing the FADs will significantly reduce the by-catch of sharks, dolphins and juvenile tuna in the supply chain.
  • For farmed seafood, our aim is to have all the products certified to sustainable farming practices by credible third party certification schemes by 2015.

MSC products

MSC certified products are available as part of our Select brand and currently all our fresh Banana Prawns, Spencer Golf King Prawns, NZ Hoki, Smoked Cod and Western Australia Rock Lobster are MSC certified.

There are some great examples of Australian fisheries using good fishing management practices to make sure the fish stocks being targeted are healthy. The impact on the surrounding ocean eco-system is minimised and the fishery is sustainably managed. Healthy oceans not only mean great tasting seafood in our stores but healthy fishing communities who rely on the ocean for their livelihoods. Woolworths is committed to supporting our suppliers on this journey and work with our suppliers to improve the sustainability of the seafood we sell.

Where appropriate, Woolworths will co-invest under our Fresh Food Future program for sustainable improvements and certification of fisheries supplying its products.

The Northern Prawn Fishery

Most recently we were pleased to be able to assist the Northern Prawn Fishery in successfully completing the MSC certification with a $25,000 grant. This means prawns fished from the Northern Prawn Fishery can now carry the internationally recognised MSC mark – a symbol to customers that the seafood they are purchasing is from a certified sustainable fishery.

The Northern Prawn Fishery covers 771,000 square kilometres of the Timor Sea and Gulf of Carpentaria from the top of Cape York westwards across the Northern Territory to Cape Londonderry in Western Australia. The area is home to a wealth of species including White Banana, Brown Tiger and Blue Endeavour Prawns.

MSC certified products are available as part of our Select brand and currently all our fresh Banana Prawns, Spencer Golf King Prawns, NZ Hoki, Smoked Cod and Western Australia Rock Lobster are MSC certified.
