Taronga’s chimpanzees are completing health screening in their exhibit after health checks on a very unwell male chimp indicated that tuberculosis might also be present.
Tests confirmed that TB was present but the sick chimpanzee’s general health was so poor that the animal was euthanased. Comprehensive health screening of the Zoo’s chimpanzee group is continuing.
The disease is quite common in humans and animals.
There is no public health risk and Zoo staff already work within strict wildlife health guidelines.
