Giant Armadillo’s are HUGE stars! The Giant Armadillo is one of the least known armadillo species and the Giant Armadillo Project team has been working hard with support from a Taronga Field Conservation Grant to uncover the life history of this shy animal.
Chris Dryburgh recently travelled to Sumatra, on a Conservation Fellowship to take part in the ‘Way Kambas National Park Sumatran Tiger Habitat Regeneration’ Project supported by a Taronga field conservation grant.

Rhino poaching in 2014 a terrible record
Today is a sad day as reports out of South Africa state a record number of rhinos have been poached this year. To date, 1020 rhinos have died at the hands of poachers in South Africa alone, compared to last year when 1004 rhinos were killed.

Taronga Zoo is home to three beautiful Eastern Bongo (also known as Mountain Bongo), the youngest of which has recently become a fully fledged member of Taronga.
Elephant barn November 2014
Taronga Western Plains Zoo’s new Elephant barn and facility is nearing completion with the construction set to be finished by the end of the year.
Keen-eyed visitors may be fortunate enough to spot a juvenile Eclectus Parrot in the Rainforest Aviary. Hatched mid-August the young female is now fully fledged and can be seen flying around the walk-through aviary.
What!?!? I'm not playing...I'm testing the fun factor. Wind-Up Dinosaur toys are always fun...especially to race.
The Chimpanzee Sanctuary here at Taronga Zoo is becoming something that closely resembles a day-care centre.

Taronga is having an important safety evacuation drill after 3pm on Monday 8 December and all staff and visitors will be evacuated.

A fire broke out in a service building on the perimeter of Taronga Zoo overnight. Fire Brigade crews attended and extinguished the fire before 3am. No people or animals were injured in the fire. Preliminary investigations have found no suspicious circumstances.
Taronga Zoo has very different policies on animal care than the Copenhagen Zoo.
