Alisa worked at Taronga Western Plains Zoo for six months covering a maternity leave position. During her time at the Zoo, Alisa helped ensure that all 700 animals in the zoo’s population were healthy and well cared for during any illness.
The most memorable experience for Alisa during her time at Taronga Western Plains Zoo was being part of the transfer of ‘Karaka’ the young giraffe from Dubbo to Auckland Zoo.
The trip involved travelling by road to Melbourne, then on a cargo ship across the Tasman Sea over five days. Karaka was transferred to Auckland Zoo to join their breeding program and to ensure greater genetic diversity in zoo based populations.
“The best part of my role as Veterinarian is definitely the variety. Every day is different”, Alisa said.
