In October, four Tasmanian Devils from Taronga Western Plains Zoo were transferred to their new home at San Diego Zoo in the United States.
After months and months of preparation and work on the Lord Howe Island Rodent Eradication Bird Husbandry Trial, the project has come to a successful end. All 30 birds that were captured in July are back in the wild, roaming the island.
Spring is upon us, and as birdos, we are very excited to see the arrival of the summer migrants to the island. The skies, trees, and ground are starting to fill with species of tern, shearwater, and tropic bird, to name a few, that come here each year to nest. We are hopeful that we will be able to see some hatchlings before our time here is done!
On Monday 7th October 2013 Steve from Shearpower2Ewe will be coming to Backyard to Bush to shear our sheep. Come visit us at the Farmyard and watch as Steve shows us how he shears them and you could even get a chance to hold some of Wini’s wool!
Recently the Bird Show has enjoyed some rather windy days, a couple in excess of 50km/hr! Winds this strong can be a little hectic for our birds, and sin these instances some stars may not actually come out, but for others these winds make for the most exhilarating of aerial displays.
The male Red-necked Wallaby, Walter, is now about eight months old and is regularly spotted poking his head out of his mum’s pouch.

Taronga is having an important safety evacuation drill after 3pm on Monday 8 December and all staff and visitors will be evacuated.
Taronga’s commitment to all animals in its care includes the provision of a stimulating and rich environment full of challenges and activities.
A fire broke out in a service building on the perimeter of Taronga Zoo overnight. Fire Brigade crews attended and extinguished the fire before 3am. No people or animals were injured in the fire. Preliminary investigations have found no suspicious circumstances.
Taronga Zoo has very different policies on animal care than the Copenhagen Zoo.
