Zoofari 2010 - Year of the Tiger

Precious jewels, tigers and distant drums…
At this year’s Zoofari guests forgot for just a moment that they were sipping champagne in a fabulous tented pavilion overlooking the lights of Sydney Harbour and imagined they were deep in some exotic jungle…

Each year, the Taronga Foundation and the Zoofari Committee, led by its intrepid Chair Deborah Thomas, becomes ever more adventurous. Zoofari is dedicated to helping raise money for the Taronga Foundation and its conservation of threatened species. This year was the turn of the Sumatran Tiger, of which there are less than 400 remaining in the wild. Thanks to the generous support received on the night Zoofari 2010 raised $430,000.

Zoofari 2010

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Taronga Foundation has once again created a very special and rare event. The Reed Group, one of Australia’s leading Construction companies and Zoofari’s major event partner is proud to be associated with the construction of the marquee and scaffolding which enabled the guests to overlook the picturesque Sydney Harbour.

Guests were entertained by Sven the painted Tiger man, magical Butterfly stilt walkers, giraffe feeds, an appearance from Mr Munro, Taronga’s Fiordland Crested Penguin and Mav the seal. Performances from the Stiff Gins and the Double Yum Funk Club had guests up and dancing until 12.30am.

It’s no wonder that Zoofari has become a major evening in the Sydney social calendar, raising large amounts of funding through its extraordinary auctions. This year’s auction led by Justin Miller included a Big Cat Dinner in the Lions’ Den and a tiger-striped Vespa and the opportunity to name and meet Taronga’s next tiger cub. As always there were wonderful holidays to bid on.  On offer this year was a Kenyan Safari, a glamorous villa in Bali, a luxury Silversea Mediterranean cruise and a holiday retreat on South Australia’s magic Kangaroo Island.  Together with a specially designed Tiger conservation trek with the rangers in the parks of Sumatra, Zoofari once again offered amazing money-can’t buy experiences.

Vince Sorrenti emceed the evening and Louise Ginman and Justine Powell, Unit Supervisor and Senior Keeper of the Carnivores Division inspired guests when they spoke passionately about Taronga’s Sumatran Tiger breeding efforts.

One special highlight this year was a pendant created especially for the evening by Sydney society jeweller Nic Cerrone.  The “Eye of the Tiger” pendant is a large citrine stone surrounded by white and black diamonds and set in 18ct white and yellow gold.  It was displayed in a locked glass cabinet and only one hundred keys were sold with one key opening the lock to win the pendant by a very lucky guest.
