Pez, the hero of several previous blogs, is our peppy little Australian Hobby, a whole bunch of fun and our newest star, having just debuted in the Bird Show a couple of weeks ago.

Today I took a look at something quite unexpected, ‘Angus’ the Rufous Owl had laid an egg. No, he hadn’t defied the odds and become the first male to take on the hatching role. He, we discovered, is actually a she, and has now been renamed ‘Agnes’.

Angus is a Rufous Owl, and up until recently, was one of the stars of our QBE Free-Flight Bird Show.

At Bird Show we are currently training two new additions for our show, Major Mitchell Cockatoos, ‘Big’ and ‘Bounce’. ‘Big’ and ‘Bounce’, hatched in October of last year and so have a lot of learning and growing up to do.

You may have watched the Bird Show before and seen Stellar, the Black Kite, or Dixie, the Whistling Kite, but hopefully you’ll soon be able to see our newest addition, Zephyr, the Brahminy Kite.

Size matters? I think not. Check out Pez, our male Australian Hobby. The Australian Hobby is one of this country’s smallest raptors, second only to the Nankeen Kestrel.

After our Bird Show, it is not uncommon that people will come down and ask us just how we train our birds. How do we get them to display their amazing behaviours? And, how is it that they do not fly away? The answer is easy, positive reinforcement.
