The above photo is of a Red-tailed Phascogale joey!

The Red-tailed Phascogale is often mistaken for a rat, which it is not! These carnivorous marsupials live in trees and often come down to the ground to feed on insects, small birds and mammals.

Males invest so much in breeding that they all die at the end of their first mating season – though this isn’t why they are endangered! Land clearing and introduced cats and foxes have greatly reduced their numbers in the wild.
