Our iconic Aussie is in danger. Please help us keep them around forever.
1) It is estimated that at least 8% of the world’s total catch is discarded as by-catch, and in some individual fisheries it could be as high as 80%.
2) Longlines can be over 80 kilometres long and contain a thousand hooks.
3) Many technical improvements have been made to reduce by-catch, including bird scaring devices on longlines, and escape hatches in nets for turtles and dolphins.
4) The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certifies fisheries as being sustainable, not just based on the type of fish they catch, but on how sustainably their fishery is managed, including their impact on by-catch, habitats and the ecosystem.
