Sabai is the first Asian Elephant to be born at Taronga Western Plains Zoo, Dubbo. He was born at 3:50pm to Thong Dee on 2 November 2016, exactly 10 years to the day since the elephants arrived in Sydney to participate in the regional breeding and conservation program.
At birth he weighed 101kgs and was standing within 30 minutes of being born and began suckling within hours. Sabai was conceived through a natural mating between Thong Dee and Gung prior to Thong Dee being transferred to Dubbo. Sabai has an older brother Luk Chai who is also at Dubbo and often spends time with Sabai, Thong Dee and aunty Porntip.
Sabai has been incredibly strong since birth and has been growing and developing well. He enjoys exploring his surroundings and really loves the water.
