Disease Investigation - Risso’s Dolphin Mortalities

The Registry is leading an investigation into an unusual mortality event involving at least 21 Risso’s Dolphins spanning from Tasmania to Northern NSW since the end of August 2014. These dolphins are pelagic and rarely come ashore. This incident includes Tasmania and Victoria’s first ever recorded Risso’s Dolphin strandings. Five other pelagic cetacean species have also stranded along the east coast during this timeframe.

The Registry has conducted necropsies on three affected animals, coordinated sample collection and collation of results from Tasmania and Victoria, and has developed a diagnostic plan to guide the investigation.
