Testing the possibility of allowing Asian elephants of distant zoos to communicate with each other

This project will use internet communication technology to test elephants’ ability to recognise individuals using audio communication, evaluate the quality of communication between elephants across this medium versus co-located elephants and examine the potential for this type of communication to be used in zoo enrichment strategies. This research has both basic and practical applications as we may be able to introduce elephants over audio teleconferencing before amalgamating elephant herds.
