This is an introductory level course for those who are interested in the Tourism industry. The Certificate II in Tourism is a stage 6 Board Endorsed / VET course offered to year 11 or 12 students as a one year course (Terms 1 -3).

Course Information
 

This qualification is appropriate for those who have a defined and limited range of tourism operational skills and basic industry knowledge. This qualification provides a pathway to work in many tourism and travel industry sectors and for a diverse range of employers including travel agencies, tour wholesalers, tour operators, attractions, cultural and heritage sites, and any small tourism business.

  • HSC Course:The Certificate II in Tourism is a stage 6 Board Endorsed/ VET course offered to year 11 or 12 students.
  • Duration:This course runs during NSW public school term time, from February through to September (Terms 1-3).
  • Course Structure: This course includes a combination of in-class study and practical on site activities at Taronga Zoo PLUS 35hrs onsite work experience. Work experience is based on supervised practical work activities in various areas of the Tourism Industry e.g. Customer & Guest Services/ Visitor information - direction & assistance/ Tour operations/ Tour Wholesalers.
  • Classroom Sessions:Classroom sessions will start February 2019, and will be conducted once per week on a Tuesday from 12:00pm to 4.00pm at Taronga Zoo.
  • Study load:The Certificate II in Tourism course provides 3 units of credit for the preliminary (year 11) or HSC (year 12) year. Please be aware that this course does not count towards your ATAR.
  • Course Location: Classroom sessions and the majority of practical placements are conducted at Taronga Zoo, Bradleys Head Road, Mosman.


Entry Requirements
  • Must be in Stage 6 (Year 11 or 12) at school.
  • Students are expected to attend all classroom lessons.
  • Students must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or New Zealand Citizen residing in Australia for at least 6 months prior to commencement in the course.
  • Students must be able to make their own way to and from Taronga Zoo. Public Transport it available to the zoo by trains, ferries or buses.
  • Students must have written permission from their school principal/careers advisor to participate in the course.
  • Students must have written permission from a parent/guardian to participate in the course.
  • Students are required to wear the provided Taronga Training Institute Uniform and enclosed footwear at all times when attending Taronga.
  • Students should bring a laptop computer (preferable) or tablet computer to classes if possible.

Note: All 11 units (4 core and 7 elective) must be completed to gain the Certificate II in Tourism.


Pathways

This course offers a continuing pathway of study at Taronga Training Institute from Certificate I Tourism (Australian Indigenous Culture) (stage5/VET Board Endorsed) to Certificate III Tourism.

This qualification provides a pathway to work in many tourism and travel industry sectors and for a diverse range of employers including travel agencies, tour wholesalers, tour operators, attractions, cultural and heritage sites, and any small tourism business.

Course fee includes student uniform T-Shirt and Jumper and all course materials. 


Application Process

If you are not in Year 11 or 12 or have completed school please click here to register your Expression of Interest for an enrolment application. 

If you are still attending school:

  • An initial expression of interest must be submitted by the school via the EVET system on behalf of the student. Please noteexpressions of interests/applications will not be accepted in any other form.
  • Enrolment in this course needs to be coordinated with the students’ school.
  • Entry Requirements: Students will be required to submit further documentation, upon request. Students must meet the selection criteria and demonstrate good English skills, both written and verbal, and basic numeracy skills.
  • Applicants will be required to complete an enrolment form in due course. This will be forwarded to the Student by their school once a formal offer of a position has been made by Taronga Training Institute.

Important: Acceptance into the course will be based on merit (subject to students meeting minimum entry requirements) and is NOT first in first served.
