Taronga has been delivering formal education programs for over 40 years. Today, over 150,000 students participate in Taronga education programs including more than 100,000 whose experience includes a visit to Taronga Zoo.

Opening mid 2018, the Taronga Institute of Science and Learning will be a new purpose built precinct in the heart of Taronga Zoo that will enable Taronga to build on its capacity to deliver world-class science, research and education outcomes. It will put conservation science on display to inspire future generations to become champions for change and will deliver positive outcomes for the environment and the community.

The co-location of science and education within the Taronga Institute will bring STEM programs to life for students from pre-K to PhD and will create an unique and exciting opportunity to experience a ‘living laboratory’.

Taronga Institute programs will establish tangible links between theory and practice using Taronga science to provide context for learning and opportunities for practical training on site at Taronga Zoo. The Taronga Institute will also provide:

  • Themed immersive classrooms that will transform education experiences at the Zoo;
  • Opportunities to see conservation science in action through open labs; and
  • Professional learning courses for teachers to advance science pedagogy and learning outcomes for students.

The first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, the Taronga Institute will also establish Australia as the regional leader and globally significant contributor to zoo-based conservation science. Learn more here.
