SYDNEYSIDERS HELP SAVE THE PLIGHT OF THE BLACK RHINOCEROS AT THE TARONGA DINNER
A favourite on Sydney’s social calendar, the Taronga Dinner held on Wednesday June 23 proved once again the community’s generous support in saving a rare species.
Held at the glamorous Establishment Ballroom through the generosity of Foundation patron, Justin Hemmes, a line-up of Sydney celebrities, philanthropists and guests were joined by MC and SBS presenter Julia Zemiro and Lawsons Auctioneer Marin J Farrah to help raise a staggering $300,000 to assist Taronga’s Black Rhinoceros breading and research program.
The plight of Black Rhinoceros is critical; they are likely to disappear from the wild in less than a generation. This due to habitat loss, poaching and human conflict – they are often caught in the crossfire of civil unrest.
The money raised will go directly to Taronga Zoo’s global conservation plan for Black Rhinoceros and help to continue their ground breaking research into increasing the odds for their long term survival. It will help fund research into Rhino IVF and purchase a digital radiography machine for Taranga Western Plains Zoo, thereby improving not only the future of Rhinos, but all the animals care for at the Veterinarian Quarantine Centre.
Julie Zemiro, SBS presenter of one of Australia’s favourite television series ‘RocKwiz’, MC the evening and entertained guests with her zest and humour. While Senior Veterinarian, Dr Benn Bryant, who manages the Black Rhino Breeding Program at Taronga Western Plains Zoo spoke about the unique Rhino IVF program the zoo is implementing to save this magnificent animal.
Guests had the rare opportunity to bid on exclusive auction items including the’ ‘Big Cats Dinner for 20’ and the chance to experience an exclusive offer to bathe one of the Zoo’s elephants and also meet calves Luk Chai and Pathi Harn. This opportunity alone raised over $26,000 and demonstrated the popularity of these two special additions to the zoo.
