With numbers as few as 400, the wild Sumatran Tiger exists only on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, an area that has recently undergone significant human development and agricultural growth. Rainforests in Sumatra are being cleared to make way for unsustainable palm oil plantations, thereby further destroying these precious habitats.
The work so far...
Taronga and Taronga Western Plains Zoos are involved in ongoing international endeavours that aim to protect Sumatran Tigers and raise awareness of their plight. Funds generated for tiger conservation enable us to help in a number of ways – through habitat protection, regeneration and the prevention of illegal trading of tigers and tiger products. These projects are supported by research at both of Zoos
The Sumatran Tigers at Taronga and Taronga Western Plains Zoos are ambassadors for their wild counterparts, and their existence helps to generate awareness of threats to the species as a whole. The population of Sumatran Tigers in human care in Australasia is also vital insurance against catastrophic declines in the wild, and its management is organised to preserve the genetic and behavioural diversity of offspring.
Where Taronga is going...
By 2016, Taronga's centenary year, we will have completed a state-of-the-art Tiger facility and exhibit. This undertaking will enable us to expand the space for the tigers, continue our breeding program, as well as create an immersive, emotive and inspirational journey for the visitor to take away crucial messages about tiger conservation and be inspired to take action.
We need your help so that Taronga can continue this vital work to help secure a future for these magnificent animals.
