The image is fanciful, even mythological as Durer had never seen a real rhinoceros, but Westerners believe it a true likeness for centuries after. "Probably no animal picture has exerted such a profound influence on the arts." It remains a powerful artistic influence. This Rhino is after the 1956 bronze scultpure by Salvador Dali (after Durer's Rhinoceros), Rinoceronte vestido con puntillas (Rhinoceros dressed in lace) and is executied in verdigris, bronze and gold leaf.

Artist statement

Gaye Chapman is a visual artist of international standing and is one of the foremost painters working in Australia today, her cross-disciplinary Visual Art + Science work over decades is obsessed with the environmental impact of alien/exotic plants and animals as 'the Other' versus their inherent Beauty.
Gaye (PhD Contemporary Art) has many national and international art prizes, residencies collections and exhibitions to her name including: multiple-finalist in the Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize; Sulman Prize; Kedumba Drawing Award; Glover Prize for Landscape Painting and finalist in the Archibald Salon des Refuses; Blake Prize and World Year of Physics Art Prize.
