Macheo, a three year old male White Rhino, became ill on Friday 1 July 2016. A general anaesthetic was conducted to investigate the problem, which revealed a blockage or impaction in the large bowel. Veterinary staff have provided intensive medical treatment on a daily basis since Friday, and his Keepers have stayed with him to ensure he has been as comfortable as possible.

Despite this intensive medical treatment the animal progressively deteriorated and on Monday 11 July 2016, veterinarians determined the animal’s organs had begun to fail. Staff had to make the difficult and heart-breaking decision to humanely euthanise the rhinoceros.

Rhinos have similar anatomy to horses and are susceptible to gastro-intestinal problems, such as colic.
