Taronga Zoo is delighted that a Bilby sponsorship was given to Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge to celebrate the birth of their son. Bilbies are one of Australia’s unique native animals. The desert dwellers were once found right throughout Australia, but are now threatened in the wild. Taronga is part of a national breeding program across many Australian zoos and wildlife organisations that are involved in conservation, breeding and research to provide an insurance population to safeguard this species into the future.
Taronga’s staff and keepers are incredibly proud that Australia’s gift to the royal couple has recognised the remarkable and unique wildlife of Australia and the work of Australian zoos to care for them.
Taronga’s Director and CEO Cameron Kerr confirmed that arrangements are underway for a plaque at the Bilby exhibit to acknowledge the gift and important connection that has been forged.
