A perfect winter’s night heralded the opening of Mosman’s newest café at one of Sydney’s greatest icons - Taronga Zoo.
A team effort between Taronga and one of Australia’s leading caterers, Restaurant Associates, saw Giovanni Pilu (of the two hatted restaurant Pilu at Freshwater) asked to head up the new café.
His inspiration were the classic Italian cafes that serve great coffee, fresh baked goods and Italian and Sardinian specials for lunch. Guests on the night saw what the space looks like set up for a function for 250 (it’s usually open from 9.30am to 5pm only) and it’s gorgeous.
You can’t beat the smell of freshly baked muffins first thing in the morning – especially when they are taken out of the oven on their steel mesh trays and sold still warm at the counter. Now we know they’re not Italian but they are one of Giovanni’s favourite breakfast treats and he sure has the right recipe!
All that is needed now is a flat white made by the talented barista Sunam using Lavazza coffee and you have what many consider one of the best treats on the north shore. Or you can go hard and order the delicious free-range egg, pancetta and tomato panino (the Italian version of a bacon & egg roll) or go healthy and enjoy the fresh fruit salad with organic yoghurt and honey.
The café services not just the Zoo patrons, but locals too with 90 minutes free parking. As it’s at the Zoo’s Main Entrance, there is no need to pay any admission fee to be smitten with the tree kangaroo in the courtyard’s gum tree or the peacock that strolls by the cafe.
Lunch is a visitors’ delight and definitely a destination for international guests. With that view on a sunny day, sipping a fine Italian Pinot Grigio and savouring Giovanni’s Sardinian pasta with sausage ragu is Sydney at its best.
