Taronga Western Plains Zoo’s Veterinarian, Benn Bryant recently visited the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary in Way Kambas National Park, Sumatra to provide veterinary assistance to an adult male Sumatran Rhino with health problems.

The Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary is home to the critically endangered Sumatran Rhino. It is estimated that only 250 Sumatran Rhinos remain in the wild.

The Sanctuary offers these animals some protection and a natural environment while staff work to create a sustainable captive population as insurance against the possible extinction of the species in the wild. This is the third visit to the Sanctuary for Benn who continues to provide veterinary expertise and support to the staff at the Sanctuary.

There are already plans in place for him to return later this year to assist with a Sumatran Rhino reproductive program.
