21 September – UN International Day of Peace
Members of Youth At The Zoo (YATZ) and the Jane Goodall Institute Australia (JGIA) Roots and Shoots program came together yesterday to celebrate the United Nations International Day of Peace. After a very special Welcome to Country from Nardi, we were presented with information and videos that taught us all about Jane Goodall and the wonderful work that JGIA does both locally and globally.
After the introduction, YATZ and Roots and Shoots members had an hour to explore the zoo and get to know each other - a great way to contribute ideas and learn about both programs from one another. Then it was off to see the Chimpanzee Keeper talk, where Keeper, Katie Hooker taught us all about Taronga's Chimpanzee family.
At Backyard to Bush, weheard a very interesting and educational presentation from Kerry, the YATZ Coordinator, where the group got to meet some of Australia's native animals including Tahlia, the Ringtail Possum and Yarra, the Diamond Python.
Following the presentation, everybody made their way down to the Concert Lawns where each person made and decorated a personal peace pledge inside a paper dove. During this time, a huge dove sculpture was constructed and every person in the group formed a giant peace sign. Photos were taken in order for us to share our International Day of Peace celebrations with the rest of the world! To end the day on a high note, the dove was paraded through the zoo with music to promote peace among all zoo visitors. It was an incredible feeling to be able to share our passion with members of the public, and hopefully inspire them to find peace with people, animals and the environment.
A huge thank you to Jessie Neal, Nancy Maloney, Nicky Kim-McCormack and Kerry Staker for all of your hard work organising this fantastic event. We all had an incredible time!
