Taronga and Taronga Western Plains Zoos have over 545 volunteers dedicating their time across a diverse range of programs to support the work of Taronga Conservation Society Australia. National Volunteer week is a time when we can reflect and say thanks for the great work undertaken which the organisation is so grateful for.
Like mums around the world this Mother’s Day, Taronga Gorilla, Kriba, is keeping a watchful eye on her increasingly independent two year old daughter, Kipenzi.
Saturday, May 4th, was a wonderful bright day as Taronga staff, volunteers and YATZ (Youth at the Zoo), jumped on a coach and headed off to the beautiful Capertee Valley near Lithgow, home and natural habitat of the endangered Regent Honeyeater.
I noticed when I visited the tigers, which have swapped exhibits with the lions, a couple of black horizontal stripes with a vertical one, on one tiger’s forehead. With my Chinese heritage, the stripes reminded me of a Chinese Character “王” , means “King”, which represents as prowess and admiration. In Western culture, the lion is also seen as a King.
Today only five species of Rhino remain in the world. They are all under threat from poaching shrinking wildness which are the two biggest threats.

It is not the first time that I've watched the seal show at Taronga Zoo. Every time I see the show, it refreshes my mind, but one thing is never changed: Taronga’s ambitious efforts for sustainable marine life.
Now they may be cute and small, but Meerkats are actually the most challenging group of animals our Carnivores keepers care for. They are powerful little critters with a very complex social structure. At Taronga’s Meerkat Desert the current alpha female is Nairobi who is very comfortable as leader of the mob. Southern Corroboree Frogs are on the brink of extinction. This year, no wild Corroboree Frog eggs were found during the annual census. Taronga is part of a program to arrest the decline of this vibrantly coloured frog which is dying out due to Chytrid Fungus.

Update on three year old White Rhino Macheo
As part of a 10 year Centenary Master Plan upgrade, Taronga has submitted plans to build an Australian Habitat Exhibit (phase 1) which includes an overnight conservation experience called the Taronga Wildlife Retreat.
Taronga Zoo would not dissect animals for public display. Taronga’s first concern is always for the welfare and dignity of the remarkable animals in our care.
Taronga Zoo’s young male elephant, Luk Chai, 5, had some dental work on his tusks today. Taronga’s Senior Veterinarian, Dr Larry Vogelnest, said some elephants including Luk Chai, have brittle tusks that are prone to cracking and infection.
