Caring for Ageing Elephants

Three of the elephants at Taronga Western Plains Zoo are considered to be in their twilight years. To ensure all three females maintain good health and a high quality of life as they grow older, keepers and veterinarians at the Zoo have put in place a special care program to assist with age related matters.

Elephant Training Techniques

Elephants are highly intelligent animals and they learn new things very quickly. At Taronga and Taronga Western Plains Zoos we train the elephants for their own physical and mental well-being.

Gary Miller: Elephant Manager, Taronga Zoo

Gary has worked as an elephant keeper at Taronga Zoo for the past seven years. Prior to this he spent many years working with both Asian and African Elephants at several international zoos including San Diego Wild Animal Park and Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Florida. With his level of expertise, working closely with elephants he has also consulted at many zoos in the United States.

Why is it important to get Tang Mo pregnant?

Tang Mo, along with four other adult Asian Elephants was brought to Taronga Zoo from Thailand in 2006 to establish the first Conservation Breeding Program for their species in Australasia.

Elephant Conservation Education

Helping educate school children about the importance of Asian Elephants and biodiversity, helped Sri Lankan communities to understand the need to conserve elephant habitats.

Anti-poaching Campaign in Zambia

This anti-poaching campaign aims to reduce the illegal snaring and shooting of animals for the bush meat trade, which is damaging species such as buffalo, elephants and hippos.
