This project uses internet communication technology. We aim to test elephants’ ability to recognise individuals using audio communication, evaluate the quality of communication between elephants across this medium versus co-located elephants.
After some technical diffi culties, we have fi nally succeeded in linking our herds through the internet. Elephants were able to communicate through speakers and microphones set up in Perth and Taronga Western Plains Zoos. The personality of the elephants shone through with the less adventurous elephants leaving the barn immediately, but then voluntarily coming back in, stretching towards the speakers and making friendly rumbling noises. This is the fi rst step in a long line of enquiry into elephant communication.
