Baby boom in the Eland herd

Taronga Western Plains Zoo’s Eland herd is experiencing a baby boom with 10 calves born over the past two months.

The calves are all doing well and so far keepers have been able to see that we have two males and three females. The other five individuals are a bit quick and elusive just yet!

The calves are suckling from their mothers as well as having a little nibble on grass. They are all very playful and can be seen hanging out together. Their little horns are starting to be visible and before long they will start to display sparring behaviours.

The Eland calves are most active in the morning and late afternoon. The expanding Eland herd is now at 38 animals with possibly another couple of calves on the way!
