Taronga is continuing its wage remediation project for casual employees. All current and former staff affected under the TCSA Salaried Award have been contacted, with remediation payments on track to begin from late July. Taronga’s payroll system has also been updated for casual employees covered under the TCSA Salaried Award to ensure the accurate future payment of casual loading and 1/12th loading in lieu of annual leave.
Since this remediation was communicated to staff, Taronga has also clarified external legal advice on the casual and shift allowance entitlements for employees under the TCSA Wages and Retail and Restaurant Awards.
This advice confirms that casual employees covered under these awards are entitled to a 1/12th allowance calculated on the loaded rate of pay for work performed on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays. This loaded rate includes the base rate of pay and the applicable casual allowances.
This misinterpretation is carried across both the current and legacy payroll systems and will be remediated for a six-year period.
As part of the original wage remediation plan, Taronga identified the need to correct the calculation of the 1/12th allowance for work completed on weekdays since a new payroll system was introduced in February 2021. This error calculated the 1/12th allowance on the base rate of pay, rather than the loaded rate of pay.
As previously committed to, communications will be sent to current and former staff impacted under the TCSA Wages and Retail and Restaurant Awards in the coming weeks, with remediation payments slated to commence in August.
