Taronga Zoo has very different policies on animal care than the Copenhagen Zoo.Taronga breeds to defined animal population targets and rarely encounters a situation where an excess of animals occurs.Where animals need to leave its breeding programs, the zoo seeks to re-home them.Recently, when a new male Silverback Gorilla was imported to establish the next generation in Taronga’s conservation breeding program, the zoo conducted an international search and eventually re-homed its aging male Gorilla to Mogo Zoo, along with senior females and their offspring.Taronga Zoo has a published Animal Welfare Charter which outlines its commitment to “provide dignity, respect and the best care for our animals and strive to be a leader, an advocate and an authority on animal welfare”.
