Taronga Zoo deplores and rejects the practice and cruelty of dolphin hunts undertaken through the Japanese ‘Taiji’ drive fishery. Taronga is an active member of the regional Zoo and Aquarium Association (ZAA) and through that forum, raised our concerns with the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) about the possibility that Japanese members could have received dolphins from these hunts. On 20 April, the WAZA Council voted unanimously to suspend the membership of the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums (JAZA) after they could not reach agreement on issues involving JAZA member zoos and aquariums taking dolphins from the Japanese drive fishery. WAZA determined that JAZA had violated the WAZA Code of Ethics and Animal Welfare. The WAZA Council re-affirmed its position that members of WAZA must confirm that they will not under any circumstances acquire dolphins from the Taiji fishery.
