Tour the new Elephant facility in February

Throughout the month of February, visitors to Taronga Western Plains Zoo will have the opportunity to go behind-the-scenes and see the new state-of-the-art elephant facility.

A guided tour of the facility will take place at 11:45am daily in February, led by one of the Zoo’s Elephant keepers. The tour will give visitors the chance to see not only this new facility but what is behind-the-scenes and where the elephants will sleep at night.  

The new $4.3 million project has been under construction for the past 12 months, with the finishing touches being added in early 2015.

“This is a great opportunity to tour the new elephant facility prior to the elephants arriving from Taronga Zoo in the first half of 2015,” said Supervisor, Jennifer Conaghan.

 “The tour will take visitors on a guided tour behind-the-scenes to see the new elephant barn and large paddock at the rear of the facility.”

“It will also provide insight into the environmental aspects of the facility as well as how elephants are cared for at Taronga Western Plains Zoo.”

“Visitors are not required to book in for this tour, simply visit the Zoo and be at the African Viewing shelter at 11:45am”, said Jennifer.

The tour is free of charge and will take place at 11:45am daily. The meeting point for this tour is at the African Elephant viewing shelter.
