Zoo celebrates 30 years of volunteering

Taronga Western Plains Zoo is celebrating 30 years of volunteering, with a special morning tea today to mark this significant milestone and thank the Zoo’s many volunteers for their years of service.

The Zoo has over 80 active adult volunteers who perform a variety of roles including guiding, assisting visitors during school holidays, food preparation for the animals, observing animal behaviour, creating animal enrichment items as well as testing water quality.

“The contribution our volunteers make to the Zoo is never underestimated, we are always very grateful for the assistance and the support they provide,” said Zoo Director, Matthew Fuller.

“Our volunteers are an extremely important asset and help deliver a number of vital range of services to both visitors and animals.”

The Zoo’s volunteers range in years of service from 29 years right through to a new group of recruits who have started just this year.

“Volunteers play an important role in any organisation or charity and we are so very fortunate to have a dedicated group who want to support conservation and help educate our visitors about the work we do here,” said Matthew.

The 30 year milestone will also be celebrated with a special event this evening at the Savannah Function Centre where Channel Seven’s Simon Reeves will be the special guest.

“This special evening event will recognise the many hours spent by our volunteers supporting the Zoo’s services and will celebrate their contribution to inland NSW’s best tourist attraction,” said Matthew.
