A little of the Great Barrier Reef in Dubbo

As I stood in the laboratory at Taronga Western Plains Zoo it was funny to think that we are standing here looking at the Great Barrier Reef…well some of the coral samples at least.  The samples have all been collected over the past couple of weeks at the Great Barrier Reef and have been cryo-preserved and shipped to Taronga Western Plains Zoo where they will be stored in its frozen zoo. The two coral species that the samples have been taken from are vital to the structure of the reef and will be able to be thawed in the future and used to reseed or reconstruct the reef, if required. It is nice to think that here in Dubbo we are playing an important role into the preservation of one of Australia’s most iconic natural wonders and we are over 1700kms inland.Mandy – Zoo communications
