Giraffe calves pass one month milestone

Our Giraffe calves have passed the one month milestone and are going great guns! They are spending a lot of time together and often have races around the paddock to see who is the fastest. They really enjoy a gallop around to stretch their legs on cooler days and visitors may spot them running in the morning or afternoon. They are generally resting in the middle of the day.

The calves are really growing in confidence. They will follow the herd into the night yards, mingle with the neighbouring zebras through the fence and have also starting to venture towards the front of the exhibit with the rest of the herd at 10.10am, when the Giraffe in Focus encounter takes place.

The experienced mums are continuing to do a fantastic job and are particularly hungry given they are nursing their calves regularly. They come to the Giraffe in Focus feed and eat as much as they can, as fast as they can before returning back to the calves to watch over them for the rest of the day.

The other herd members are starting to interact more with the newest members of the herd especially the juveniles, who will play together with the calves. Both mums are still pretty protective and they sometimes remind the herd to be careful around the young ones with a gentle head butt.

We are still waiting on the third Giraffe calf to be born and hope this happens later this month.
