The team at Taronga Western Plains Zoo are deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of aged Hippo, Suzie on Tuesday.

Suzie was 46 years of age and has been at the Zoo since before it officially opened in 1977. She was actually the 5th animal to arrive at the Zoo and has played a large role in the Hippo breeding program throughout her lifetime.

Suzie has produced six calves, with three of her offspring still at Taronga Western Plains Zoo.

Suzie was matriarch of the Hippo herd and according to Zoo keepers had a bit of a stubborn streak with plenty of personality, presenting keepers with unique challenges on occasion.

Suzie passed away in her sleep overnight with two members of her Hippo family by her side.
