Workshop overview

How does reproduction ensure the continuity of a species? And does artificial manipulation of DNA have the potential to change populations forever? In this advanced Stage 6 workshop, students investigate how biodiversity arises through reproduction and heredity, examining how genetic information is passed between generations.

Using a range of Australian species as case studies, students will explore reproductive strategies, inheritance patterns and the role of selective pressures in shaping populations. Students also investigate the reproductive and genetic technologies used at Taronga Zoo (including artificial insemination, genetic testing and assisted breeding) to gain rare insight into how these techniques support conservation outcomes and help maintain healthy, genetically diverse populations.

Outcomes

Content

Science | Biology

  • BIO12-12 A - explains the structures of DNA and analyses the mechanisms of inheritance and how processes of reproduction ensure continuity of species
  • BIO-12-13 A - explains natural genetic change and the use of genetic technologies to induce genetic change
  • BIO 11/12-5 - analyses and evaluates primary and secondary data and information
  • BIO 11/12-7 - communicates scientific understanding using suitable language and terminology for a specific audience or purpose

Inquiry question:

How does reproduction ensure the continuity of a species?

Inquiry question:

How can the genetic similarities and differences within and between species be compared?
