Workshop overview

The Meet a Keeper Day Program is designed for students aged 14 years and over who are passionate about wildlife and curious about careers in zoo keeping or the broader captive animal care industry. This immersive, full‑day experience gives students an authentic glimpse into the daily responsibilities, challenges and rewards of working in a modern zoo.

Led by experienced Taronga Western Plains Zoo keepers and educators, students will discover what it takes to care for animals across diverse species groups. They will learn about training pathways, core skills required for animal husbandry, workplace expectations, and the role keepers play in welfare monitoring, enrichment, conservation and public education.

Students also gain behind‑the‑scenes access and take part in activities that reflect real keeper duties, offering a rare opportunity to observe professional practices up close. The program is ideal for young people exploring future careers in animal care, veterinary pathways, conservation, or zoological operations.
