Workshop overview
In this immersive Year 11 Depth Study, students engage directly with scientists and conservation experts working on the front line of wildlife protection. This program provides a rare opportunity to explore how scientific skills, research methods and fieldwork experience are applied to safeguard some of Australia’s most vulnerable animals and ecosystems.
Students gain firsthand insight into Conservation Biology in action as they visit the Plains‑wanderer and Bilby breeding facilities located within the Taronga Western Plains Zoo Sanctuary.
Through these case studies, learners examine how expert teams are tackling the complex challenges facing species on the brink of extinction — from habitat loss to climate pressures — and developing strategies to rebuild and sustain wild populations.
By connecting classroom learning with authentic conservation work, this depth study builds students’ understanding of ecosystem dynamics, biodiversity, species recovery programs and the scientific decision‑making that shapes conservation practice. The program positions students as emerging scientists, encouraging critical thinking, inquiry and appreciation for Australia’s rich natural heritage.
This excursion contributes five hours to the required Depth Study and is supported by complementary pre‑ and post‑excursion learning activities.
