Taronga’s Director and Chief Executive, Cameron Kerr, said today the Zoo’s second straight win the NSW Tourism Awards Major Attraction category was a great endorsement for the compelling power of wildlife to inspire people.Mr Kerr said: “With our sister zoo, Taronga Western Plains Zoo at Dubbo also winning Silver in the New Tourism Development category, we’re very proud that the many changes at both zoos have been recognised at these important industry awards.”“Modern zoos strive to maintain their contribution to the community in terms of conservation, education, research and, most importantly, the quality of the visitor experience.”“From a field of 157 finalists across all the categories, this is an outstanding result and great recognition for the passion of our staff who present the remarkable stories of wildlife every day to our visitors.”Taronga’s success reinforced the ceaseless change in the presentation and care of wildlife which by inspiring visitors made an important contribution to the Zoos’ not-for-profit endeavours on behalf of wildlife.Visitor support enables the Zoos to introduce people to remarkable animals and give them the opportunity to make a real difference towards achieved a sustainable future for people and wildlife.Mr Kerr said: “Tourism, therefore, is directly supporting conservation, be it in education of young Australians, the support of Aboriginal culture or in situ conservation projects in other countries for animals like the endangered Sumatran Tiger.”“We very proud of these awards and the recognition they represent for the community’s concern for a sustainable future.”Taronga Western Plains Zoo’s success was for the new Savannah Visitor Plaza and Free Access Area where the community and regional visitors can enjoy a comfortable, interesting and convenient start to their wildlife experience.The Zoos were nominated in four categories including Major Tourist Attraction, Best Tourist Attraction, New Tourism Development and the Sun-Herald People’s Choice Awards.
