Update - Taronga Western Plains Zoo statement

One of Taronga Western Plains Zoo’s male White Rhinos, Digger, passed away suddenly on Monday 13 January 2014.The male White Rhino had not shown any signs of illness and initial veterinary and laboratory investigations have confirmed the cause of death as acute liver failure. Liver failure was not a symptom associated with previous White Rhinoceros mortalities in 2012. The investigation continues as to the possible cause of the liver failure. There have been no subsequent reports of ill health in the White Rhino herd.Digger was a young adult and was introduced to the herd in August 2013 after arriving from Monarto Zoo in South Australia. He had settled in well to the herd at Taronga Western Plains Zoo. Keepers are saddened by his passing as they had developed a close bond with him during his time at the Zoo and were very fond of him.
