At approximately 1.30am this morning a fire broke out in a small service building on the perimeter of Taronga Zoo. A resident across the harbour noticed the flames and alerted the Fire Brigade, which sent crews immediately in response. The crews were able to extinguish the fire by 2.10am.No staff or animals at the zoo were injured in the fire, which occurred in a building used for storage and amenities for waste management staff.NSW Fire Brigade undertook a preliminary investigation of the cause of the fire and found no suspicious circumstances. It’s possible that the source was a faulty electrical plug. The central part of the building is quite badly damaged, while adjacent rooms storing historic zoo artwork and signage were undamaged. The area has been cordoned off pending a structural assessment and professional clean up of the area.
