Zoo animals beat the heat and cool off

Summer is definitely being felt across Central Western NSW over the past week with temperatures over 35 degrees most days.Whilst some of the animals are use to the hot weather, Zoo Keepers have many ways to keep the animals comfortable when the temperature soars.“Today the Hippo is enjoying a hose down to keep his skin cool but on a warm day they also spend plenty of time in the water,” said keeper, Melanie Friedman.“Our Sumatran Tiger is also receiving an icy, cold surprise; we have frozen some of their favourite meaty treats into an ice block.”“The ice block will take him some time to get through as he enjoys licking the cold surface, especially on a hot day like today,” said Melanie.“Some of the animals really enjoy the hot weather as it is an opportunity to spend some time wallowing in the mud, or for the Asian Elephants, its hot enough to go for a swim,” said Melanie. The Zoo provides a number of ways for the animals to cool down during the hot weather including wallows for all three Rhino species, swimming pools for the Elephants, irrigation that sprays across exhibits for many of the animals as well as misting systems for Tasmanian Devils.
