Zoo Hosts Nuns' Fun Run/Walk

Taronga Western Plains Zoo will host a fun run/walk on Sunday 24 May 2009 to launch the Garvan Institute's Nuns' Run. The Nuns' Run is being led by two Sisters of Charity, Sister Helen Clarke and Sister Leone Wittmack, who will cover the 400km distance from Dubbo to Darlinghurst in an effort to raise cancer awareness and crucial funds for the establishment of a new $100 million Cancer Centre within the St Vincent's Research Precinct, Sydney.  Over 13 days and visiting seven towns, the Sisters invite participation in community activities along the route to Sydney.  The Nuns' Run will commence with a Fun Run/Walk at Taronga Western Plains Zoo, Dubbo on Sunday 24 May 2009.  The Sisters will then travel on foot through Molong, Orange, Bathurst, Lithgow and Katoomba finishing in Sydney on Friday 5 June with a fun run/walk at Centennial Park. "Taronga Western Plains Zoo is excited to be able to assist the Garvan Institute in their fundraising endeavours as cancer is a disease that can touch every person in some way shape or form," said General Manager, Matt Fuller. "The Fun Run/Walk will be a wonderful day out for the whole family and I encourage the local community to come out and support the event," said Matt. To register for the fun run/walk at Taronga Western Plains Zoo and raise money with support from family and friends, sponsor a participant or one of the Sisters visit www.nunsrun.org.au.  Registration is $25 for adults, $10 for children (under 18 years) and $10 for seniors/pensioners.  You can also get your family or colleagues together and join as a team. One in two men and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer.  The Garvan St Vincent's Campus Cancer Centre will combine St Vincent's best practice cancer care and Garvan's internationally renowned cancer research.  Clinicians and researchers will work side by side enabling research findings to move quickly into patient care for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of individual cancer patients, with the ultimate goal of improving cancer outcomes for all Australians. Taronga Western Plains Zoo is located at Dubbo in Central Western NSW.  The Zoo is open everyday from 9am - 4pm.  For more information about Zoo visit www.taronga.org.au or contact 02 6881 1400.
