In the spirit of giving this Christmas, why not give a future to wildlife and people half a world away?Africa’s wildlife is under threat from worsening environmental conditions and illegal poaching activities. Hundreds of rhinos and tens of thousands of elephants are being poached across the continent each year for their tusks and horns. In northern Kenya, people, livestock and wildlife are desperately competing for survival having had their food and water sources destroyed by years of severe drought. You can help make a difference to Kenya’s people and wildlife just by buying some hand-made beads!Purchase your beads online here. These colourful Christmas gifts from the ‘Beads for Wildlife’ range are handmade by 800 women across Kenya, inspired by their traditional dress. Each beadwork sold helps the women to establish a reliable source of income that doesn’t affect the local wildlife. Funds raised by the beads sales will also support 21 Wildlife Protection Rangers, sponsored by Taronga Western Plains Zoo, in defending precious wildlife within the Kenyan Biliqo Conservancy from the threat of poachers.By simply buying a ‘Beads for Wildlife’ souvenir next time you visit, you can help provide relief for wildlife and communities across the other side of the world! Plus, you get to take home a beautiful piece of jewellery or one of the many eye-catching hand-made gifts. Christmas doesn’t get much better than this!‘Beads for Wildlife’ are available at our online Zoo Shop or in the Zoo Shop in the Savannah Visitor Plaza, open every day from 9am – 4pm.
