Keepers welcomed the arrival of a male Addax calf on 6 November 2013,but unfortunately following giving birth the mother became ill and subsequently passed away. The keepers quickly came to the rescue of the now-orphaned calf transferring him to the Zoo’s Wildlife Hospital to be cared for.It was touch and go at first and veterinary staff are still monitoring the calf closely during this high risk time of its life, but it is doing well at present. The calf is fed four times a day by a vet nurse whilst it is living at the Wildlife Hospital. Over the coming weeks the calf will be reintroduced to the herd and hand reared by the keepers so the animal can have contact with other Addax and learn the important natural behaviours and social skills it needs to live in the herd.
